Starbucks Rewards, Explained

By Jacob Elsayed, re-verified against official sources each morning

In short: Since March 10, 2026, Starbucks Rewards pays Stars by status, not payment method: Green 1 Star per $1, Gold 1.2, Reserve 1.7. What 25, 60, 100, 200, 300 and 400 Stars buy, when Green Stars expire, how the birthday reward works, and how to earn at the counter.

Starbucks Rewards is Starbucks' free loyalty program, reworked on March 10, 2026. Earning now depends on your status level, not how you pay: Green members earn 1 Star per $1, Gold (500 Stars in 12 months) earns 1.2 and Reserve (2,500 Stars) earns 1.7, whether you pay with a Starbucks Card, cash, credit or debit. Stars are spent in fixed tiers: 25 for a drink customization, 60 for $2 off, 100 for brewed coffee, tea, a bakery item or a packaged snack, 200 for a handcrafted drink or hot breakfast item, 300 for a packaged sandwich, salad or protein box, and 400 for select merchandise. Green Stars expire six months after the month they were earned; Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while you keep status. Members get one free birthday treat a year if they joined at least 7 days before their birthday and made a Star-earning purchase that year.

The March 2026 refresh dropped the old 50- and 150-Star tiers, added a 60-Star $2-off option and tied earning to status instead of payment method, so preloading a Starbucks Card no longer doubles your Stars. Starting levels in March 2026 were set from 2025 activity; after that, levels run on a rolling 12-month window. The 100-Star tier (brewed coffee, tea, a bakery item or a packaged snack) is the fastest way to turn Stars into something, and Double Star Days are the fastest way to earn them. Questions people ask

Do I earn more Stars when I pay with a Starbucks Card?

Not anymore. Before March 10, 2026, paying with a preloaded Starbucks Card or the app earned 2 Stars per $1 and other payment methods 1 Star. Starbucks' FAQ now says your status level, not your method of payment, sets the rate: 1 Star per $1 at Green, 1.2 at Gold and 1.7 at Reserve. Loading the card still earns a one-time bonus of 10 Bonus Stars for a digital reload of $30 or more, or 25 for $50 or more.

How many Stars for a free drink?

200 Stars for a handcrafted beverage up to $10 pre-tax, the same tier as a hot breakfast item. Brewed coffee or tea costs 100 Stars. At the Green rate of 1 Star per $1, 200 Stars is about $200 of pre-tax spending before bonus events; at Reserve (1.7 Stars per $1) it is about $118. Starbucks notes that some stores offer only the 200-Star tier.

When do Stars expire?

At Green, 6 months after the calendar month they were earned. Make a qualifying purchase, redeem a reward or digitally reload $30 or more in the month before they expire and Starbucks extends every expiring Star by one month. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire as long as you maintain that status.

How do I reach Gold or Reserve?

Gold takes 500 Stars in a 12-month period; Reserve takes 2,500. You then have 12 months to earn the same number of new Stars to keep the level. Fall short and you move down (to Gold if you earned 500 to 2,499, to Green if under 500) and your level balance resets to zero. Gold earns 1.2 Stars per $1 and at least four extra Double Star Days a year; Reserve earns 1.7 and at least six.

Is there a birthday reward?

Yes, one free birthday treat per year. You must have joined at least 7 days before your birthday, have your birthday in your account and have made at least one Star-earning transaction earlier in the year. Green members redeem on the birthday itself; Gold members have 7 days and Reserve members 30 days, starting on the birthday.

How do I earn Stars when I order at the counter?

Scan the barcode in the Starbucks app before you pay; you earn at your status rate however you pay. Mobile orders earn automatically. Stars are not earned on tax, tips, alcohol, gift card purchases or Starbucks Card reloads, and Starbucks' pages describe no way to add a receipt after the fact.

What is Free Mod Mondays?

A perk added in the March 2026 refresh: on one Monday a month that Starbucks designates, members get one free beverage customization worth up to $2 pre-tax, selected as a coupon at checkout or mentioned to the barista. It cannot be combined with other Rewards or offers.

How DailyBite verifies this: the daily refresh re-checks each weekly grocery deal against the store's own site, weekly ad or FAQ, and the owner tests deals in person. Prices vary by store and division, and counters sell out: the price you pay is the one on the shelf tag that day.
