Cheap Japanese Food: Real Meals Under $10

Japanese fast casual is where the US comes closest to a cheap meal that is also good for you: broth, rice, grilled protein and vegetables at a fixed everyday price. The catch is geography. The two chains that publish mains under $7, Marugame Udon ($5.99 kake udon) and Yoshinoya ($4.69 vegetable bowl, $8.99 grilled chicken bowl), are West Coast only. Near Washington, DC the verified options are Sarku Japan (teriyaki bowls, nutrition published, price varies by mall), Kura Sushi in Tysons (about $3.79 a plate), Hana Japanese Market's $4 onigiri in DC, and the grocery sushi days.

Prices are for the store named on each chain's ordering site (Marugame: Victoria Gardens, CA; Yoshinoya: Alhambra, CA) and vary by location. Kura Sushi's figure is the average plate price in its fiscal 2025 annual report; the chain raised prices about 3.5% in November 2025 and publishes no 2026 plate price.

The pattern across every chain here is the same: the cheap, healthy item is the plain one. Kake udon, the vegetable bowl, the onigiri, the California roll. Add protein and the price climbs toward $10; add fried toppings and the nutrition falls apart. For a Japanese-style meal that is cheap everywhere, the frozen Trader Joe's teriyaki bowl and the weekly grocery sushi days are the two that work in every state. This page will grow as prices verify: Maruichi in Rockville, Mitsuwa, Nijiya, Tokyo Central and H Mart's prepared-food counters are next.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest Japanese meal in the US?

At a standing price with nutrition published, Yoshinoya's Regular Mixed Vegetables bowl at $4.69 (470 calories). It is California only. Marugame Udon's kake udon is $5.99 in California, Hawaii and Washington, but Marugame publishes no nutrition.

Is there cheap Japanese food near Washington, DC?

Sarku Japan has nine Virginia and sixteen Maryland mall locations, including Dulles Town Center and Fairfax, and publishes nutrition for its teriyaki bowls (430 calories and 19 g protein for the chicken bowl); its prices are set by location and were not readable online, so check the counter. Kura Sushi in Tysons prices by the plate, about $3.79 on average. Hana Japanese Market in DC sells onigiri for $4, two for $7. For a sit-down-quality roll under $6, the grocery sushi days are the real answer.

Is Marugame Udon in Virginia?

No. As of October 2026 Marugame's own locator lists 27 US stores in California, Hawaii and Washington state. Reports of a Dulles Town Center location are a mix-up: the Japanese counter there is Sarku Japan.

Is Kura Sushi a cheap meal?

Only in small amounts. At about $3.79 a plate, two plates (four pieces) are around $7.60 before tax and three plates pass $10. It is a cheap snack or a light lunch, not a full meal under $10.

Is Japanese fast food healthy?

The bowls here are mostly rice, broth, grilled chicken or beef and vegetables, with 430 to 600 calories and 19 to 37 g protein. Sodium is the weak point: 530 mg for Yoshinoya's vegetable bowl, 920 mg for its chicken bowl, 880 mg for Trader Joe's teriyaki bowl. Fried items (katsu, tempura) are not counted here.

Why isn't Sarku Japan's price listed?

Sarku prices by location and its ordering app requires a login, so no price could be read from an official page. DailyBite does not publish prices from delivery apps or third-party menu sites. If you see the price at a counter, send it in and it will be added with the date and location.

How DailyBite verifies this: the daily refresh re-checks each weekly grocery deal against the store's own site, weekly ad or FAQ, and the owner tests deals in person. Prices vary by store and division, and counters sell out: the price you pay is the one on the shelf tag that day.
